Your engine management systems are crucial to your vehicles running condition. Vehicles have developed longer and longer lists of sensors over the years. From low tire pressure monitoring sensors to back up sensors new vehicles are full of some idiot proof sensors, but some are crucial to getting the proper performance out of your engine.

I’m refering to your vehicles sensors aimed at monitoring how exactly it’s engine is running. The ECU (Engine Control Unit), in all modern vehicles sole  purpose is to take all the readings from all of these sensors and adjust various components to achieve maximum power/efficiency.

The “Mass Air Flow” MAF sensor detects exactly how much air is entering the engine for combustion, and helps to adjust the amount of fuel so that the air fuel mixture is ideal for the power efficiency of the engine. The O2 sensor reads the exhaust gases to help adjust that mixture as well. The mixture is adjusted through the fuel injectors, which are directly controlled by the ECU.

Some vehicle have variable valve timing, in which the electronically controlled valves have there timing adjusted in order to provide either maximum efficiency, or maximum power. (Ex. V-Tech) The ECU usually changes its focus between gas mileage and maximum power based on throttle position and/or engine revolutions.

Some more basic but still crucial sensors are the; water and oil temperature sensors. The most efficient set up of the combustion chambers changes along with the temperature. This monitoring system allows necessary adjustments to be made to allow for your engine to work as good as possible at all times.

Check your sensors and ensure that they are clean and in good working order so you vehicle can run like new.

I hate to even think about cars these days. They are so much more complex than they used to be. I would rather go back to horse and buggy sometimes.
